The JS Therapy Group Approach to Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Your past is present. Just because it may seem like you have forgotten about something bad that happened to you does not mean you were not impacted that that bad thing. Whether you are an adult or a child, our therapists use approaches that are supported by many research studies and are shown to help you heal from the trauma.
Two of our favorite approaches are Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). You can read more about these two evidence-based approaches in the next two sections.
Also, we provide services to all individuals, couples, and families without discrimination on the basis of race, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability, gender, health status, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or relationship status.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
EMDR was proven to be effective in reducing symptoms from traumatic life experiences. We use back and forth eye movements, or other types of bilateral stimulation, to process traumatic memories and disturbing emotions. First, we target a disturbing memory. Then, we ask the client to hold in mind different aspects of the memory as we help the client do eye movements. As the processing occurs, the original disturbing memories and emotions are desensitized. This means they won’t affect you in such a painful way.
EMDR can assist you in processing traumatic events faster than traditional talk therapy. After the memory has been desensitized, we help you learn new ways to think about the trauma and separate unwanted body sensations like PTSD symptoms from the traumatic memories.
Studies show that secure connections with our loved ones help us heal from past traumas and help us cope better with current and future life challenges. If you have had a traumatic life experience, we would be happy to talk with you about how EMDR could help you and your family.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy for Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
ART has also been shown in research studies to reduce the symptoms of PTSD. Treatment is short-term, sometimes 1-5 sessions, and afterward, the client will keep the knowledge but lose the pain.
In a similar fashion to EMDR, the therapist uses a step-by-step protocol to help the client process pieces of the traumatic event that have not been integrated into long-term memory. It also alleviates the painful body sensations that usually accompany the trauma.
Talking is not necessary during processing. ART helps you process the negative experiences without having to talk about them, helping you become the director of how you want to remember your life experiences. Another positive aspect of ART is that the session is closed in a way that uncomfortable emotions do not linger in between sessions.
