Who Can Benefit from EMDR?

If you’ve seen our blogs in the past, you may have already read about what EMDR is and some of its benefits.

As a reminder, EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and is an evidenced based practice for PTSD and trauma treatment.

In this blog, we will take a look at some of the possible scenarios and populations that could be benefitted by using EMDR.

Who Can Benefit from Trauma Therapy in Overland Park, KS and Liberty, MO

firefighters | first responders needs PTSD treatment in overland park, ks

PTSD Treatment for Military:

One of the more widely-known populations with PTSD are combat veterans and those in the military.

Those with experiences in combat are most commonly associated with PTSD and its symptoms.

This is simply due to the mass amount of traumatic events that many members of the armed forces are exposed to. Many times, trauma therapy is widely available near military installations, like in Leavenworth, Kansas and Overland Park, KS.

Trauma Therapy for First Responders:

Another case similar to this is first responders. They might not see the same kind of events as those in the military, but they certainly see sometimes horrific accidents and traumatizing events to change how a person sees the world around them.

For example, firefighters and police officers alike see car accidents, shootings, and fires sometimes all in a day’s work.

Seeing all of this fear and hurt can change a person drastically, depending on the severity of the situations witnessed.

Natural Disasters and PTSD Treatment:

Victims of natural disasters are another example. These people could have gone through earthquakes, floods, tornados, tsunamis, just to name a few.

Additionally, they could have lost loved ones in the events, and therefore experience crippling survivor's guilt. This can sometimes be even more difficult than the actual memories of the events that took place.

PTSD Treatment for Children:

Children (and adolescents) with disturbing and traumatic experiences often can experience PTSD from the events that took place at a young age. Memories from these young ages can be extremely formative to the brain, which tends to make trauma worse in younger people.

Non-PTSD related struggles:

Sometimes EMDR can be helpful for seemingly smaller struggles that aren’t related to PTSD.

For example, performance anxiety can have a massive impact on the mental health of those experiencing it. This can occur with athletes before a big game, and musicians before a concert. It can even apply to businessmen and students when it comes to a presentation or confronting classmates and coworkers.

Even if you are confident in your abilities, performance anxiety can kick in and make you feel nervous and doubt yourself. EMDR can help us identify the stem of these struggles and resolve them, making it easier to participate in these activities again.

Generalized anxiety can be just as difficult to deal with. Other more specific cases of this include people with phobias, panic disorder, and OCD.

All of these are commonly found, and you might find yourself identifying with one or even more. EMDR can be something that you look into to help deal with these.
